Top Choices for Indian Students
Amid recent changes to immigration policy rules, Indian students are quickly rethinking whether the UK remains a favorable study destination. Currently, the UK no longer allows international students to bring dependents unless they are taking up postgraduate research studies.
Furthermore, more stringent post-graduate work visa rules have caused uncertainty. As a result, many students are looking to other countries that may have more suitable immigration policies.
Indian Students Lose Interest in UK
While the UK remains a popular education hub, data reveals a shift. According to a report by the Business Standard, Indian student numbers dipped by 4% from 2023-2024. However, Q1 2025 statistics show indicators of a rebound, with global student visa applications up by 30% vs. Q1 2024. In particular, Indian student applications went up by 29%.
Although the numbers remain high, this marks a slowing growth rate compared to Canada and Australia. Universities in these countries continuously update their courses to keep pace with changing industry requirements. Overall, English is still the primary language of instruction for international students.
“The global race to attract Indian talent will intensify, and emerging destinations that align education with employability, affordability, and long-term opportunities will attract the best and brightest minds,” noted Meti Basiri, CEO and co-founder of ApplyBoard.
Meanwhile, Oxford International Education Services managing director Mohit Gambir has some advice for aspiring international students.
“My only advice to students is to thoroughly research your course, university, current visa policies, and post-study work rights before making any decisions,” he noted.
Canada, Australia: Top Destinations
Meanwhile, Canada and Australia have seen a surge in student interest. For instance, Canada’s flexible immigration rules and longer post-study work permits make it a top choice.
Moreover, international graduates in Canada can work for up to three years under the Post-Graduation Work Permit Program (PGWPP). Also, Canada’s student visa approval rate for Indians rose to 71% in 2023, up from 60% in 2022.
Similarly, Australia has relaxed its visa norms to attract more global talent. International students can now work up to 48 hours per fortnight and are eligible for extended graduate visas.
As a result, Indian student numbers in Australia grew by over 20% in 2023, according to Australia’s Department of Education.
Indian Students Eye Germany
Germany is also rising as a serious alternative, especially for STEM aspirants. Its tuition-free public universities and growing number of English-taught programs are key draws.
Although language remains a challenge, many students see long-term potential. Furthermore, Germany offers an 18-month post-study job-seeking visa, encouraging students to stay and work.
According to German academic exchange service DAAD, Indian student enrollment in Germany crossed 43,000 in 2023. This is a 7% rise over the previous year.
Overall, education consultants believe the trend will persist unless the UK reconsiders its policies.
Looking Ahead
In summary, the UK’s tightening stance is pushing Indian students toward countries offering better pathways and stability. Meanwhile, destination diversities are growing, giving students more global options.
Unless the UK revisits its approach, it risks losing its competitive edge in international education.
